"But when a chaplain once tried to silence a mother who cursed the president, Major Beck corrected the clergyman. “The best way to handle that situation,” he says, “is not to tell someone what they can or cannot do in their own home.”

A GOOD BOOK AND A CONVERSATION AT THE "DASH INN"
Another excellent book on the history of conservative "diplomacy" is: "Us vs. Them: How a half century of Conservatism has undermined America's Security," by Peter Scoblic. A good read on the history of conservative ideology/diplomacy, including an account of how close we came to a nuclear war during Reagan's first term in office. It reminded me of a conversation I had with Mike Schmoker at "The Dash Inn". We were talking about "pushing the button" and ending civilization as we know it with a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union. I said I could not press the button even if I new the Soviet Union had just launched an all out nuclear attach on the US, if I knew it would end the world as we knew it. Mike S. said he would have no problem doing it because "God" could just recreate it all again. This is the kind of mentality that pervades the conservative mind-set. Luckily, Reagan changed his views after his close call with a nuclear holocaust, and decided he liked M. Gorbachev--I guess it wasn't an "evil empire" after all. "...Since we've started pushing abstinence we have seen no change in the numbers on sexual activity," said John Santelli, chairman of the department of population and family health at Columbia University. "The other piece of it is abstinence education spends a good amount of time bashing condoms. So it's not surprising, if that's the message young people are getting, that we're seeing condom use start to decrease."
